Unit of Measure
inches
centimeters
Head:
Measure about 1" above your left eyebrow, around head above ears.
Neck:
Measure around your neck and around Adam's apple (if applicable).
Bust:
With arms out (like you're flying), measure under arms around rib-cage across nipples at the largest part of the bust.
High (Natural) Waist:
With arms out (like you're flying), measure the smallest part of your waist, at the bottom of your rib-cage (this will be about 4 inches above your belly button - NOT where you wear your modern jeans).
Low (Modern) Waist:
With arms out (like you're flying), measure your waist just above your hip-bone. It may be around the belly-button area - wherever you button your modern jeans.
High Hip:
Measure your hips across the upper part of your hip-bones - generally where the middle of the zipper in your jeans would lie, about 4" below your low waist measurement.
Low Hip:
Measure your hips across the largest lower part of your butt and lower abdomen.
Coat Length:
From the top of center of your shoulder (i.e. where a shoulder-bag strap would rest), measure over all frontal terrain to the top of your knee. This gives me an approximation as to how long to make your coat tails.
Chest (Front):
From across the front of your chest between the arm seams of a well-fitted T-shirt. If in doubt, lay a straight ruler across your chest and measure to where your armpit folds. (You don't want to dig into the armpits here, you just want the measurement across).
Neck to Waist (Front):
Measure from your collarbone to the top of your modern jeans waist, or where you would like your waistcoat buttons to end/split in the front.
Straight Arm:
With your arm relaxed at your side, measure from the top of your shoulder hinge down next to your arm to the wrist-bone. If you have trouble finding the shoulder hinge, take your left index finger, and place it on your shoulder. Move your right elbow up. Move your left index finger closer to the arm off the shoulder - when it starts moving when you raise your elbow, you have just passed the hinge.
Wrist:
Measure around your wrist across the wrist-bone that bumps out.
Shoulder:
Measure from your neck at the shoulder (where a crew-neck T-shirt collar usually is seamed to the shirt) to the hinge at the top of your shoulder. If you have trouble finding the shoulder hinge, take your left index finger, and place it on your shoulder. Move your right elbow up. Move your left index finger closer to the arm off the shoulder - when it starts moving when you raise your elbow, you have just passed the hinge.
Chest (Back):
Measure across your shoulder-blades between the arm seams of a well-fitted T-shirt. If in doubt, lay a straight ruler across your back and measure to where your armpit folds. Swing your arms front to back - you want your arm to clear the end of the ruler.
Neck to Waist (Back):
Measure from the vertibrae that bumps out at the base of your neck to where your belt lies on your modern jeans, or wherever you would like your waistcoat to split in the back.
Upper Arm:
Make a muscle and measure the largest part of your upper arm.
Bent Arm:
With an arm up to your opposite shoulder (like you're playing a fife, shouldering a flag/musket or adjusting your drum sling), measure from the back of the arm/shoulder at the pivot, measure around your bent elbow to your wrist-bone. This should be around 0 to 2 inches longer than your straight arm measurement.
Thigh:
Largest circumference of your upper thigh
Upper Knee:
Circumference around your thigh above the knee-cap and the back of your knee at the fold
Gaiter Top:
Circumference around your thigh about one hand's-width (4"10cm) above your upper knee measurement
Gaiter Height :
Measure from the previous position (gaiter top) to the floor without shoes.
Lower Knee:
Circumference around your shin above the calf, below the knee-cap and around the back of your knee at the fold.
Calf:
Measure around the largest part of leg below your knee.
Ankle:
Measure the smallest circumference of your ankle, just above the ankle bone.
Heel/Instep:
Point your foot and measure around the heel and the instep.
Inseam :
Measure from crotch to the floor without shoes. This should be approximately 2"5cm longer than your store-brand inseam number.
Breeches Length (Back):
Measure from your (unstrained) belt-line of your modern jeans, around the largest part of your buttocks behind your hamstring and to the fold in the back of the knee.
Seated Length (Back):
Measure from your (unstrained) belt-line of your modern jeans, around the largest part of your buttocks behind your hamstring and to the fold in the back of the knee.
Breeches Length (Front):
Measure from the inside fold of your lap down the top of your leg, over the kneecap to the bottom of the knee where you would like your breeches to end.
Thigh Length (Front):
Measure from the inside fold of your lap down the top of your leg, over the kneecap to the bottom of the knee.
Gaiter Length (Bent Knee):
Measure from the previous position (gaiter top) over your bent knee to the floor just outside your ankle without shoes.
Inseam (Kneeling):
Measure from crotch to the floor without shoes while kneeling on your knees.
Calf Height:
Measure from floor to the bottom of your calf where it starts to flare out.
Spat Height:
Measure from floor to the top of your instep where it meets your leg.
